The Boston Red Sox have demonstrated that they are prepared to contend for a division title in 2025, despite finishing 81-81 in 2024 and missing the playoffs. Given that the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles are also in the AL East, it will undoubtedly be difficult, but Boston has made some impressive offseason signings.
Boston benefits greatly from having Walker Buehler and Garrett Crochet in the starting lineup, but it is still far from sufficient. The Red Sox reportedly want to make one more “significant move” before the season begins, either through a trade or a free agent signing. Given his relationship to Boston manager Alex Cora, Alex Bregman might be a suitor.Join the discord channel to get the inside word during the MLB offseason, subscribe to our weekly MLB newsletter, The Moonshot, and listen to MLB Insider Robert Murray’s work on The Baseball Insiders podcast for more news and rumours.
Alex Cora talks about the Red Sox’s chances and the connection to Alex Bregman.
Given that Rafael Devers, a three-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger award winner, is the Red Sox’s current third baseman, it seems odd that the team is being linked to talks of signing Bregman or perhaps trading for Nolan Arenado.
It appears like Cora is not ruling out the prospect of signing Bregman, even though trade for Arenado is not a sure. Adam London from NESN 360 gave us Cora’s remarks about Bregman.
At third, Alex was a Gold Glover.base, and everyone is aware of that,” Cora informed Caron. I spoke with him back in 2017. Because there was (Carlos) Correa and (Jose) Altuve, he had to play third.
We can infer from this that Cora wants the Red Sox to think about signing Bregman and putting him at second base. It would be difficult to convince a two-time World Series winner who has played third base for all nine of his career to switch positions, though. Cora sounds unconcerned.
“Alex has always been a Gold Glove second baseman in my mind. The way he moves, his size. However, we’ll see where he ends up because he has played third base at a high level. Cora went on.
Fortunately, Bregman is said toreceptive to such a move, but Boston still faces challenges.
Playing Bregman at second base would knock Vaughn Grissom, who the Red Sox acquired in the Chris Sale trade last winter, out of the lineup and may obstruct the path of some elite prospects. For Rafael Devers and Triston Casas, things would get even more complicated if Bregman were interested in moving to first base or third base.
If Bregman were to sign with Boston, second base would be the most sensible short-term option, but there is no simple fit.
