Calgary, AB – A devastating car accident has claimed the life of a beloved member of the Calgary Aurora Chasers, a renowned group of amateur astronomers and photographers. The tragedy occurred during an early morning aurora chase in rural Alberta.
Ryan Williamson, 32, a talented photographer and dedicated member of the group, was driving to a predetermined viewing location when his vehicle lost control on a icy highway. Despite wearing a seatbelt, Williamson succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
“We are shattered by the loss of our dear friend and fellow chaser,” said Chris Ratzlaff, founder of Calgary Aurora Chasers. “Ryan’s passion for capturing the aurora borealis inspired us all. His memory will live on through his stunning photographs.”
Williamson, an experienced aurora chaser, had been with the group since 2018. His captivating images had garnered international recognition, and he was known for his infectious enthusiasm and willingness to share expertise.
Investigation Underway
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is investigating the accident. Preliminary reports indicate that road conditions and speed may have contributed to the crash.
“Aurora chases often require traveling to remote areas, frequently under challenging conditions,” said RCMP Sergeant, Tom Sparks. “We urge all drivers to exercise extreme caution and prioritize safety.”
