Los Angeles, CA – Ray Manzarek, founding member and keyboardist of the iconic rock band The Doors, passed away on May 20, 2013, after a long battle with bile duct cancer. He was 74.

Manzarek’s death marked the end of an era, as he was the last remaining original member of the band’s classic lineup. His unique keyboard playing style, which blended jazz, rock, and blues, helped define The Doors’ sound.

“Ray was a huge part of my life, and I will always miss him,” said Robby Krieger, The Doors’ guitarist. “He was a tremendous musician and an incredible person.”

Manzarek’s cancer diagnosis came as a shock to fans and fellow musicians. Despite his illness, he continued to perform and record music until his health declined.

Early Life and The Doors

Born on February 12, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois, Manzarek grew up in a musical family. He met Jim Morrison in 1965 at UCLA’s film school, and they formed The Doors with Krieger and drummer John Densmore.

The Doors’ self-titled debut album (1967) launched them to fame, with hits like “Light My Fire” and “Break On Through (To the Other Side)”. Manzarek’s innovative keyboard playing was instrumental in shaping the band’s sound.

Legacy and Impact

Manzarek’s influence on rock music is immeasurable. His playing style, which often featured his signature Fender Rhodes piano sound, has inspired countless musicians.

“Ray was a true original,” said Doors’ biographer, Danny Sugerman. “His contributions to The Doors’ music and legacy are undeniable.”

After The Doors disbanded in 1973, Manzarek continued to perform and record with various projects, including The Doors’ reunion tours and solo albums.

Fellow musicians, fans, and friends flooded social media with tributes and condolences.

“Ray Manzarek was a genius,” tweeted Iggy Pop. “His playing was haunting and provocative.”

“Ray’s passing leaves a void in the music world,” said Billy Corgan, Smashing Pumpkins frontman.
